Necesito campo, bichos, escalada...

PhD research position: Foraging ecology of juvenile Australian fur seals

The following PhD research project is available for a suitable candidate for commencement in 2005 under the co-supervision of Dr John Arnould (Deakin University, Burwood Campus) and Dr Roger Kirkwood (Phillip Island Nature Park).
Foraging ecology of juvenile Australian fur seals
Australian fur seals (Arctocephalus pusillus doriferus) breed at 10 sites in south-eastern Australia and produce an estimated 19,000 pups per annum. Since 1970, pup production for the species has almost doubled as part of the recovery from commercial harvesting in the 1800s. Most of this increase has occurred at sites in the north of the breeding range, with two colonies in particular now accounting for 55% of the total population for the species: Seal Rocks (25%) and Lady Julia Percy Island (30%). With the recent increases in fur seal numbers there has been rising interest in their diet, foraging areas, and prey consumption in order to better understand their role in marine ecosystem and potential interactions and conflict with commercial fisheries. While much recent work has focussed on the foraging ecology of adult females and adult males, there is little information for juvenile animals. As the early period of nutritional independence is likely to be a critical time for the survival of juvenile animals, knowledge of their foraging ecology is crucial for understanding the factors which may influence the rate of population recovery as well as gaining a better knowledge of potential fisheries interactions.
This project, therefore, aims to investigate the foraging ecology of known-age juvenile (up to 4 yr) Australian fur seals. Individuals from two colonies with contrasting foraging environments will be studied: Seal Rocks which is located >200 km from the edge of the continental shelf in central northern Bass Strait at the entrance to Western Port; and Lady Julia Percy Island which is situated on a narrow strip of continental shelf, 30 km from the shelf-edge. Components of the study will include determining:
1) At-sea movements, foraging locations and haul-out patterns
2) diving behaviour; rates of prey capture and foraging efficiency
3) prey composition and energetic value;
4) indices of diving capacity (total blood volume/ oxygen carrying
capacity) and body condition;
5) surveys of the foraging environment (sea-surface temperature,
sea-conditions, prey abundance, competitor abundance, fisheries activity)
While the logistical support for this project is already funded, the candidate will need to secure financial support for their own living
expenses (i.e. scholarship or equivalent). We require a self-motivated
student with proven field skills. Field trips of up to 14 days to remote seal colonies on islands in Bass Strait will need to be organised by the student, including arranging field assistants. A keen interest in marine research and familiarity with marine mammal science would be required. Previous experience at handling large animals would be an advantage as would a sound knowledge of statistics and proven writing skills. Interested students should contact either of the stated co-supervisors by email or telephone to discuss the project further.

Uruguay (orcas)

In Uruguay, WDCS is funding this new project, headed by Veronica Iriarte, to study the occurrence, behaviour, and feeding habits of orcas in the waters surrounding Isla de Lobos, Punta del Este.Orcas are considered opportunistic feeders, and have the most diverse feeding habits of all toothed whales. However, some orca populations have become specialised in different foraging strategies based on the food source available to them. In British Columbia (Canada) and Washington State (USA) at least two different orca populations have been described - residents and transients. The two populations share the same area but don't associate with one another, and have differences in their genetics, morphology and feeding habits (which leads to differences in behaviour and social organisation). Residents prey on fish, while transients prey primarily on marine mammals. In Antarctic waters, two orca populations with different feeding habits, morphology and ecology have also been described. Currently, however, all orcas are considered one species, the world over. The specialisation of sympatric populations in foraging techniques is unusual for mammals and vertebrates in general. The system used by orcas can provide important information about the consequences of reproductive isolation on populations and, to discover more, new studies on orca populations in different parts of the world are necessary.Prey species of orcas inhabiting the southwestern Atlantic include fish, rays, octopus and squid, birds, and marine mammals (including pinnipeds - seals and sea lions - and other cetacean species). Orca predation from longlines used for catching large pelagic species (such as tuna) has also been observed in Brazil and Uruguay causing losses to the industrial fisheries. As a result of this, the orcas are often shot at and, as orca population have a slow growth rate, this threat, even occasional, could limit population growth rate further. The orcas of South America are also threatened by accidental capture in fish gillnets and, until a few years ago, orcas were live-captured in Argentina to supply the captivity industry.During this new study, Veronica aims to:1) Determine whether the presence of orcas in the coastal waters of the study area is seasonal or year round.2) Determine whether the orca populations present prey upon the pinnipeds (Arctocephalus australis and Otaria flavescens) that inhabit the island. 3) Photo-identifiy individuals. This will allow Veronica to determine movement patterns and association patterns between individuals. Knowledge of these patterns can then be used for estimating population parameters.4) Integrate the resulting information with what is known about other orcas off South America (Argentina and Brazil).Working together with Brazilian and Argentine researchers (such as the WDCS-Argentina team), a detailed study and comparison of photo-identified individuals in Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay can be achieved. This will be fundamental for obtaining important data on orca presence in the region, contributing to the knowledge of the geographic variation of the species. The knowledge of the presence and feeding habits of the species in Uruguayan waters will be extremely important for developing the understanding of orca interactions with industrial fisheries, analysing the responsibility of orcas in the decreasing of fish catches, and establishing non-lethal methods for diminishing and preventing losses.2003 UpdateSighting surveys began on January 2, 2003. So far we have the results from 4 of the surveys (3/1/03 - 21/1/03; 20/2/03 - 1/4/03; 17/403 - 29/4/03; 30/5/03 - 11/6/03). A following survey was to be conducted from June 25 to September 3, 2003.So far during the four surveys, orcas have only been recorded in the fourth survey (30/5/03 - 11/6/03). Depending on results form the fifth (June to Sept) survey, it may be that like in Argentinian and Brazilian waters, the species are seasonally present in Uruguayan waters (but in the winter not summer). Future activities planned for this field project are continued sighting surveys form the Lighthouse, to liaise with Miguel Iniguez and WDCS Argentina, plus zodiac surveys for photoidentification.

RAPTORS OCEAN TO OCEAN. Volunteers are needed to conduct raptor watches in Panama this coming migratory season. The Panama Audubon Society, in collaboration with Hawk Mountain Sanctuary and international and local partners including The Peregrine Fund, Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, CEASPA, Metropolitan Nature Park, the Canopy Tower Hotel, and the Gamboa Rainforest Resort, will conduct the first annual "Raptors Ocean to Ocean" hawk watch from 4 Oct to 15 Nov 2004 in Panama. Every year several million raptors, primarily Broad-winged Hawks, Swainson's Hawks, and Turkey Vultures, pass through Panama on their way to and from wintering grounds in South America. In 2004 we plan to conduct counts at 10-12 watch sites stretching across the Isthmus of Panama from the Pacific to the Atlantic Ocean to assess the main routes of passage through this 50-mile wide migratory bottleneck. A previous count at three sites in 1998 recorded a total of more than 1.6 million raptors in six weeks, with the highest one-day count totaling more than 460,000 birds. Counts will be conducted by a combination of overseas volunteers and local participants. Overseas volunteers will be expected to pay their own travel costs to Panama but will receive free room and board while participating in the count, to the extent that space is available. The count will include sites in and near Panama City (which are expected to record the largest number of raptors, with nearly 700,000 birds counted at Ancon Hill in 1998) as well as sites within tropical forest in nearby National Parks and in rural communities. Most watch sites are near the Panama Canal. A limited number of spaces are still available at Panama's Canopy Tower and Rainforest Resort hotels, two of Panama's premier birding destinations. Overseas volunteers will be expected to commit to at least one week of participation, and for a daily count period of 8 AM to 6 PM. Preference will be given to those with previous hawk watch experience. Spanish language skills are not essential (but of course would be helpful). For further information, contact LOYDA SÁNCHEZ, Executive Director, Panama Audubon Society (EM: lesanch@cwpanama.net) or GEORGE ANGEHR, Director for Science, Panama Audubon Society (EM: angehrg@tivoli.si.edu).

(art. 3.5).

Pollution triggers bizarre behaviour in animals

19:00 01 September 04
Exclusive from New Scientist Print Edition.

Hyperactive fish, stupid frogs, fearless mice and seagulls that fall over. It sounds like a weird animal circus, but this is no freak show. Animals around the world are increasingly behaving in bizarre ways, and the cause is environmental pollution.
The chemicals to blame are known as endocrine disruptors, and range from heavy metals such as lead to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and additives such as bisphenol A.
For decades, biologists have known that these chemicals can alter the behaviour of wild animals. And in recent years it has become clear that pollutants can cause gender-bending effects by altering animals' physiology, particularly their sexual organs.
But now two major reviews have revealed that the chemicals are having a much greater impact on animal behaviour than anyone suspected. Low concentrations of these pollutants are changing both the social and mating behaviours of a raft of species. This potentially poses a far greater threat to survival than, for example, falling sperm counts caused by higher chemical concentrations.

Snails and quails

The two research teams have independently collected evidence revealing the effects on egrets and gulls, snails, quails, rats and macaques, minnows, mosquito fish, falcons and frogs. Behaviours altered include mating and parenting, nest building, learning, predator avoidance, foraging, activity levels and even balance.
In one study, for instance, male starlings exposed to dicrotophos insecticide decreased their singing, displaying, flying and foraging activities by 50%. And newts exposed to low levels of the pesticide endosulfan found it harder to sniff out the attractive pheromones of potential mates.
Researchers have also shown that increasing numbers of male western gulls hatched from eggs exposed to DDT attempt to mate with each other. In recent years, scientists have also found that lead affects the balance of gulls, while atrazine makes goldfish hyperactive and the chemical TCDD makes the play behaviour in macaques rougher.
Despite this wealth of evidence, these effects have gone largely unnoticed by toxicologists, says Ethan Clotfelter of Amherst College in Massachusetts, lead author of one of the reviews, published in August 2004 in Animal Behaviour (vol 68, p 465).

Missing a trick

Not only are we failing to acknowledge the scale of the problem caused by endocrine disruptors, but toxicologists may be missing a trick: changes in animal behaviour could be an early warning that certain chemicals are harmful. "You might see behavioural effects long before you see a population crash," Clotfelter says.
Dustin Penn and Sarah Zala of the Konrad Lorenz Institute of Comparative Ethology at the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna agree. They have just published a second review of the effects of endocrine disruptors in the same journal (DOI: 10.1016/j.anbehav.2004.01.005). "The most important point is the incredible amount of evidence that this is a widespread problem," Penn says.
Both research groups say that biologists must wake up to the fact that endocrine disruptors might explain bizarre behaviour in wild animals. And both reviews reveal that different concentrations of chemicals can have unexpected effects.
Male mice exposed to low doses of some pesticides increase their scent-marking behaviour, for instance, but decrease it when exposed to higher concentrations.

Damaging doses

"Pollutants that have been considered safe when tested at medium doses could have damaging effects at lower doses," Penn and Zala warn in their review. And conversely, toxicologists might exaggerate the risks posed by higher doses.
Other behavioural biologists back the authors' call for biologists and toxicologists to work more closely to determine the scale of the problem. "It's been decades since the first evidence appeared that chemicals in the environment can influence behaviour," says John McCarty of the University of Nebraska in Omaha, who researches the impact of pollutants on birds.
"It seems to me that this body of evidence was pushed to the background while most environmental scientists and regulators focused on mortality and cancer rates [caused by endocrine disruptors and other pollutants]."

The US Environmental Protection Agency says it cannot provide a detailed comment on the research, but promises it will investigate further. "We'll review these two scientific articles as we continue to develop an endocrine screening and testing programme," a spokeswoman told New Scientist.
Geoff Brighty, ecosytems science manager at the UK Environment Agency, agrees that studying the effects of chemicals on animal behaviour should be given a higher priority. "It is becoming recognised that behaviour is important to look at to make sure a chemical is safe, and we ignore it at our peril."

¿Alguna idea?

Thank you for adopting a Connecticut wetlands tree. Please name it and love
it!
This tree is located in East Hampton, Connecticut . It grows on the edge of
protected wetlands. Generally, wetlands are lands where saturation with
water is the dominant factor determining the nature of soil development and
the types of plant and animal communities living in the soil and on its
surface. Wetlands vary widely because of regional and local differences in
soils, topography, climate, hydrology, water chemistry, vegetation, and
other factors, including human disturbance. Indeed, wetlands are found from
the tundra to the tropics and on every continent except Antarctica.

POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCHER in Population genetics/Molecular Ecology

A Post-doctoral researcher is required for a project on population genetics and molecular ecology in bladder-wrack (Fucus vesiculosus, a marine macro algae) during the period October 2004 to August 2006, at the Department of Marine Ecology, Göteborg University. The project is funded by grants to Kerstin Johannesson & Lena Kautsky The position is available at Tjärnö Marine Biological Laboratory, a research station at Göteborg and Stockholm universities, on the west coast of Sweden. The project will use microsatellites to evaluate population structure in the marine brown algae Fucus vesiculosus and particularly in populations of the Baltic. Fucus vesiculosus is a keystone species of shallow marine hardbottom communities in the Baltic. Preliminary studies show a high degree of substructure as well as reproductive isolation between the normal and a dwarf morph confined to northern parts of the Baltic. Moreover, the dwarf morph reproduce asexually using prolifications growing from the stem. This is an hitherto unknown strategy and one aim of this project is to investigate this strategy in more detail to unravel how and where it has evolved and why. We will also assess the distribution and taxonomic status of the dwarf morph to clear out if it is endemic to the Baltic. Clonal reproduction is present also in the normal morph suggesting that this is a unique adaptation to extreme environmental conditions, such as low salinities. The successful applicant should have a proficiency in microsatellite analyses and DNA sequencing methods. It is also essential that the applicant has a proper theoretical background in population genetics and is experienced with computer-based tools of analysis. Knowledge in screening of genomic (BAC) libraries, cloning and subcloning and making
cDNA libraries is valuable for the proper development of this and related projects and will be judged as a merit. For further information please contact Kerstin Johannesson
(kejo@tmbl.gu.se).For a general information about the research station please consult www.tmbl.gu.se Application Applications, including CV, a choice of three-five relevant
publications, the names, postal and e-mail addresses of two academic referees, should be sent to: Registrator, Göteborg University, Box 100, S-405 30 Göteborg, Sweden, stating reference number E36 3356/04,no later than 22 of September 2004. Post Doctoral Researcher: Ecological and Molecular Genetic Approaches to Epidemiological Studies of Aquatic Pathogens in Great Lakes Fishes

A 3-year post doctoral research position is available to study molecular genetic and ecological factors associated with the epidemiology of Renibacterium saloninarus (RS) in salmonid fishes of the Great Lakes basin. Research will also include assessment of the importance of natural population structure, environmental and anthropogenic factors mediating
disease prevalence, transmission, and persistence. Research will be conducted through the Departments of Fisheries and Wildlife and Department of Pathology and Diagnostic Investigation at Michigan State University (MSU), with an interdisciplinary team composed of Drs. Kim Scribner
(Ecological Genetics), Mohamed Faisal (Pathology), Robert Templeman (Quantitative Genetics; Dept. Animal Sci.) and Ruth Phillips (Molecular and Evolutionary Genetics; Washington State University-Vancouver). Duties will include working with project co-PI's and supervising technical staff in each of several areas including: 1) quantitative genetic analyses of gene expression associated with RS infection in different life history stages of salmonid fishes, 2) investigation of relationships between genotype at candidate antigen-processing genes and disease phenotypes, 3) controlled experimental studies of the effect of genotype, environment and disease susceptibility. Population genetic, phylogeographic, and immuno-pathological data bases are available for numerous co-distributed species from across the Great Lakes to extend results from experimental analyses to natural populations. Requirements include a PhD and molecular skills in either disease, epidemiology, molecular and population genetics, or allied disciplines. Background in the use of microarray technology and some quantitative skills in analysis and interpretation of expression data would be desirable. The position is available as early as mid-October. Send
resume, letter of research interests and contact information for 3 references to either: Kim Scribner, PhD, Departments of Fisheries & Wildlife and Zoology, Michigan State University, 13 Natural Resources Building, East Lansing, MI 48824-1222, Tel: (517)-353-3288, e-mail: scribne3@msu.edu or Mohamed Faisal (DVM), Departments of Fisheries & Wildlife and Diagnostic Investigation, Michigan State University, Tel: (517)-432-8259, e-mail faisal@cvm.msu.edu

2004 National Parks Ecological Research Fellowship Program

The National Park Service (NPS), National Park Foundation (NPF), and Ecological Society of America (ESA) are pleased to announce the 2004 National Parks Ecological Research (NPER) Fellowship Program. The program encourages and supports outstanding post-doctoral research in ecological sciences related to the flora of U.S. National Parks. For the purpose of this program, National Parks refer to all sites administered by the National Park System including national parks, monuments, preserves, reserves, lakeshores, seashores, rivers and scenic riverways, trails, historic sites, military parks, and battlefields. The program has been funded through a generous grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
The program will award up to three fellowships each year to researchers who have recently completed their Ph.D. Awards are made for up to two years with the possibility for renewal for a third year, determined at the end of the first year. Awards support research in any area of ecology related to the flora of the National Parks. Research topics can address any level of ecological organization, ranging from populations, species interactions, and community patterns, to landscape and ecosystem level processes associated with plants. Research should focus on questions that advance the science of ecology independent of immediate Park needs. Plants, cryptogamic crusts, lichens, fungi, algae, mosses, or other flora must be the main focus of the research. Research that takes advantage of the range of environments, conditions, and scales available in National Parks is of particular interest.
Eligibility and Criteria
The competition is open to individuals who have completed their Ph.D. within three years prior to the award date and are eligible to work in the United States. The applications must include a letter of support from a faculty member or researcher affiliated with an established research institution who will serve as co-Principal Investigator for the proposed research. Proposals will be evaluated based on scientific merit; the creativity of the research question and/or approach; the potential of the applicant to conduct high-quality ecological research; and the value of the Park natural resources or ecological features (e.g., habitats, communities, gradients, species) to the proposed research. The proposed research can be focused at a single Park site or at multiple Park sites of the National Park System. A complete listing of all the units of the National Park System can be found at www.nps.gov/parks.html.
Fellowship Awards
The Program will award up to three fellowships each year. NPER fellowships will be funded for $60,000 per year for up to two years (with the possibility of renewal for a third year). The fellowship funds can be used for research stipends (maximum $45,000), fringe benefits for the Fellow, research expenses (i.e. student assistants), equipment (both field and laboratory), travel to field sites and to attend scientific meetings. In addition, Fellows will be provided with support to attend the annual NPER colloquium where they will present their research to other Fellows and representatives from the NPS, NPF, and ESA. In addition, Fellows making presentations at the ESA Annual Meeting can request travel funds to cover some of the costs of attending.
Additional information and application materials are available at http://www.esa.org/nper. Completed applications must be received at ESA Headquarters between September 1, 2004 and October 1, 2004. For more information on the NPER Fellowship Program, contact: Rhonda Kranz, Program Manager, Ecological Society of America, 202-833-8773 or nper@esa.org.
